WE ARE PHOENIX ART GROUP

Phoenix Art Group
Creating a sense of well-being through visual arts

We recognise that individuals need to be engaged in interests of their own. These interests can be used as a complementary tool towards a sense of achievement and personal well-being.

What do we do?

Phoenix Art group started as a project connected to the NHS in 2000, open to people in secondary health care. This made things complicated for those moving from secondary health care to primary health care due to recovery. The group became a peer led group in 2002 where the service users took more control of the outlook of the groups focus from recovery of mental ill health to coping and living with mental ill health. Since 2002 Adrian Moule has looked to the local authority and the NHS to help support this much valued project and has run it for fourteen years with only three years where funding paid for his time.

From 2004- 2008 Phoenix Art group provided opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees, as well as those people finding themselves in circumstances placing them at the margins of society, in poverty, ill health and ill mental health.

Although the needs of asylum seekers and refugees have fallen away at Phoenix Art Group, we can recall the success we achieved with those who used the service. Four of the service users went on to higher education, two went on to pass Masters Degrees in Fine Art and now contribute fully within the communities they live.

During this time we also opened the doors to students wanting to develop their portfolios for delivering workshops, working within education, the health sector, the arts and arts in health. We have successfully delivered training for three students one of whom went into arts and health and one into teaching.

The group has had 18 exhibitions since opening and these have been well received, we expect to be involved in at least one exhibition a year. We have provided arts and health services to universities, festivals, and arts services to health organisations including the NHS suicide prevention task force, North East Mental Heath Development Unit, Training and Development Centre Middlesbrough.

At this time we have a strong group of service users who have interests in very different areas of the visual arts. Our Steering Group is made up of people working within the health sector, teaching, social care and the arts as well as everyone using the service, thus all participants have a voice in the way the group works in the future.
